Noel Whelan urges Leeds to move for ‘quality’ Rangers midfielder

Glen Kamara Celtic v Rangers March 2021

Pundit Noel Whelan has urged Leeds United and Marcelo Bielsa to move for Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara in the upcoming transfer window.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Whites striker revealed that boss Bielsa will be a ‘big fan’ of the Finnish ace as the Argentine looks set to bolster his midfield in the summer. The Daily Mail revealed earlier this month that Rangers are ‘fighting’ to hold onto Kamara despite interest from Leeds.

Furthermore, reports have linked Arsenal with a swoop for the former Gunners youngster.

Despite this, however, there has been no agreement in place between the 25-year-old and the club to extend his current contract which is set to expire in 2023.

As such, a number of clubs are said to be monitoring the situation.

However, Whelan feels that Leeds should be moving for Kamara.

He said: “He brings quality, Steven Gerrard recognises how important he is to Rangers.

“That’s why he wants to tie him down on a new contract. Good players will always be looked at and that’s the problem.

“What he’ll bring is energy, aggression, quality passing and Marcelo Bielsa likes players with energy, players who can get around the field.

“He would bring those fitness levels and also quality and competition to that midfield position.”

Hector Bellerin is edging towards a summer move to Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal fancy signing Samuele Ricci and Tottenham have reportedly made an approach for Maurizio Sarri.

Kamara has featured for Rangers 30 times so far, in what has been a successful season for the Glasgow outfit, who ended a 10-year wait to win their 55th Scottish top-flight title.

He has registered two goals for Gerrard’s side from midfield, most notably scoring a long-range effort against Benfica in the Europa League.

How Kamara would fit in at Leeds

The midfielder would be a perfect fit at Elland Road due to his ability to be deployed as a central midfielder or as a defensive one – a pivotal role in Bielsa’s acclaimed 4-1-4-1 formation.

Currently occupying the defensive midfield role in Bielsa’s side, Kalvin Phillips’ two-and-a-half-year development under the Argentine has been revelationary, earning him his first England call-up earlier this season.

One area where the Whites have struggled this season, however, is finding suitable cover for Phillips when he’s been sidelined with injury, and Kamara could be just the man to fill the void.

In addition, with marquee signing Rodrigo Moreno struggling with a number of injuries so far and inconsistent performances from Mateusz Klich this season, the Whites have been unable to solidify a frequent partner for Northern Ireland ace, Stuart Dallas in the middle of the park.

Should he arrive at Elland Road this summer, Kamara would be a welcomed addition to Bielsa’s squad.
