Leeds will reportedly see off suitors for Patrick Bamford by offering their top scorer a lucrative long-term deal to stay at the club.

The 10-goal frontman has been outstanding in Leeds’ first season back in the top flight in 16 years. However, that form has alerted rivals who are looking to take advantage of the fact he is out of contract in 18 months.

The report in the The Sun, as cited by the Mail on Sunday, claims that Leeds want to meet Bamford’s advisors. They are ready to agree a longer contract, paying more than his current £35,000-a-week terms.

The 27-year-old is one of only seven players to have reached double figures in the top flight already and is currently level with Harry Kane in the scoring charts.

The former Chelsea academy star scored in each of the club’s first three top-flight matches of the campaign. He also bagged an impressive hat-trick in a 3-0 win at Aston Villa.

In his last seven matches he has been involved in five goals, scoring three himself.

Bamford* scored 16 goals as Leeds won the Championship last season, but there were major doubts whether he could step up to the Premier League.

After the recent win over Burnley, Bamford spoke about hitting the 10-goal mark, saying:  “It’s a good achievement.

“I don’t stop now – there’s a lot of hard work to be done but it keeps me in touch with the top scorers.

“It’s a big push but you’ve got to keep pushing and keep your targets high. Last time, I didn’t really play when I was in the Premier League.

“Attacking-wise, we are brilliant. Defensively, it’s the whole team. It’s a working in progress, isn’t it? We can’t be too unhappy with the start we’ve made.”

After their 5-0 hammering of West Brom, Leeds were brought back down to earth when they lost 3-0 at Tottenham on Saturday.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men are next in action in the FA Cup third round when they head to Crawley next Sunday.

Bielsa talks up positives after Spurs defeat

Leeds Utd boss Marcelo Bielsa insisted their heavy Tottenham defeat was “clearly better” than the ones suffered against fellow top six sides Manchester United and Chelsea.

Leeds went toe-to-toe with Tottenham in terms of chances created, but a series of mistakes at the back cost them dear.

Young goalkeeper Illan Meslier had a day to forget between the sticks, but Bielsa was upbeat despite succumbing to a 3-0 defeat.

He told BT Sport after the match: “We had moments and in general the first half was good. It was better in the initial 30 minutes and more even in the final 15 minutes of the first half.

“The beginning of the second half was our worst moment in the game. And in the end, it was again positive.

“There are two aspects that unbalanced the game. The opponents’ forwards were very damaging and difficult to contain.

“We made some unforced errors which facilitated their attack but we had good offensive production. What we needed to do was not lose the ball in our own half.” Read more…
