Leeds return to business with heavy friendly defeat to Stoke

Leeds played their first match ahead of the new season, but the result did not go as expected as they suffered a 3-0 loss at Stoke.

United secured their return to the Premier League after a 16-year absence last season and much is expected of them ahead of the campaign.

Rodrigo Moreno and Robin Koch arrived at Elland Road over the weekend, as Leeds have bought well.

They are also trying to secure a club-record deal for Rodrigo de Paul after talks progressed with Udinese.

However, in the 80-minute friendly at the bet365 Stadium, Bielsa’s men were soundly beaten by Michael O’Neill’s side.

The Potters opened the scoring after 24 minutes when Leeds failed to deal with Tom Ince’s corner. A scramble in the box ensued, leaving Nathan Collins to volley home.

Leeds had a chance to level when Jack Harrison played in Patrick Bamford, who fired wide. Earlier, Jack Butland had denied Helder Costa by rushing out of his goal.

And Leeds’ wastefulness cost them dear when Ince found Lee Gregory in the box and he fired a low effort past Kiko Casilla on 52.

Stoke wrapped up the win after 62 minutes when Ince got on the scoresheet himself.

Leeds team: Casilla, Ayling (c), Casey, Struijk, Douglas, Davis, Shackleton, Harrison, Costa, Hernandez, Bamford.

Phillips’ England call-up slammed by pundit

The maiden call-up of Leeds United midfield general Kalvin Phillips to the England senior set-up has been roundly slated by one pundit.

Gareth Southgate announced his latest England squad last week, with one of the most surprising selections that of Phillips.

The 24-year-old’s tenacious talents have never been in doubt while on the field for his boyhood club Leeds.

But with Marcelo Bielsa’s side only having achieved promotion to the top flight this summer, Phillips is thus far unproven at the top level.

Call-ups from the Championship are not all that unfamiliar. Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount received the honour while on loan at Derby Couty in 2018.

Nevertheless, the decision to select Phillips has not gone down well with ex-Arsenal and Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant.
