Leeds keen on Newcastle youngster amid contract stand-off

Leeds United are interested in Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff, as reported by The Telegraph.

Longstaff’s contract with the Magpies expires this summer. Despite knowing this for months, Newcastle have yet to negotiate a new deal with the 20-year-old.

Even though Longstaff is out of contract, it wouldn’t actually be a free signing. Leeds would have to pay a compensation fee to Newcastle. The compensation rules mean Longstaff would cost an English club more than a foreign club.

Longstaff made his Newcastle debut this season and went on to make nine Premier League appearances, scoring two goals – both against Manchester United.

He also made six appearances in the cup, scoring once.

Watford and Udinese, who share the same owners, have also been linked with Longstaff.

According to the Daily Mail, the Italian outfit have offered him a £30,000 a week, five-year deal. That would make the youngster their highest paid player.

Longstaff reportedly turned down Newcastle’s offer of £15,000 per week. He wants closer to £25,000.

Magpies boss Steve Bruce has spoken in the past about his worries about the situation.

“It’s a concern for us all, of course it is. I hope we can get that tied up, I really do,” Bruee said about his new deal.

“But, they’ve got the power these days, the players. We see it often now with young players as well. I hope there’s a bit of common sense.

“There’s nobody, at 19, played more games than him. He’s got an opportunity.”

Leeds learn Buendia cost

Leeds have reportedly been quoted £25million for Norwich playmaker Emiliano Buendia, according to reports.

The Elland Road outfit are expected to have a busy summer, as they prepare for their return to the Premier League.

A number of players have already been linked with a move to west Yorkshire. But now two more can be added to that list.

A report in the Daily Mail claims that the Whites have enquired about Canaries attacking midfielder Emiliano Buendia.

However, they have been told that the Argentine, who made 37 appearances for Norwich this season, would cost around £25m.

Buendia, 23, only scored once last season but was outstanding when the Canaries won promotion in 2018-19.
