Levy pushes Tottenham towards title winner with 73 per cent win rate

Erik Ten Hag Young Boys v Ajax March 2021

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has moved Ajax’s Erik Ten Hag up his shortlist to replace Jose Mourinho in his club’s dugout.

Spurs‘ search for a new coach goes on after Jose Mourinho got the sack last Monday. The Portuguese had faced pressure to go for some time, after a shock Europa League exit. What’s more, their slide down the Premier League table has put their top-four chances in peril amid Chelsea’s form.

Ryan Mason has taken the reins in north London until the end of the season.

However, the 29-year-old is unlikely to remain in the job by the start of the next campaign.

Indeed, Tottenham are looking for an experienced manager to take them forward, returning them to the Champions League and competing more regularly for major silverware.

RB Leipzig’s Julian Nagelsmann was on their radar. However, reports emerged on Monday that the German has agreed to replace Hansi Flick at Bayern next season.

As such, the Daily Telegraph reports that Levy has moved Ten Hag further into view for Spurs.

The Dutchman, 51, retired as a player in 2002 and Ajax is his fourth club since moving into management.

Arsenal will demand £25m from Newcastle for Joe Willock, Liverpool are considering a cut-price move for Torino striker Andrea Belotti and Atletico Madrid are ready to take advantage of Chelsea’s interest in Niklas Sule by moving for Cesar Azpilicueta.

He signed for the Eredivisie club in December 2017 and has amassed a 63 per cent win rate from 385 matches since becoming a manager.

For Ajax, meanwhile, he has won 73 per cent of his 163 matches. As such, he has earned himself an exciting reputation, despite not coaching in one of Europe’s major leagues.

Indeed, he took Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals in the 2018/19 season. His team deposed of Real Madrid along the way, before dramatically losing to Spurs in the last four.

Levy has Ten Hag, Tottenham belief

The Daily Telegraph adds that Spurs would feel confident of landing Ten Hag if they chose to go after him.

The manager will have only one year left on his contract this summer. Therefore, the compensation fee owed to Ajax for appointing him ‘should be within Tottenham’s reach’.

This season, Ten Hag is on course to take Ajax to their second league title since he arrived.
