Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has reminded Ernesto Valverde not to neglect his defence this summer, according to a report.
And the Argentina forward has reportedly told Barca to go and get David Alaba.
Valverde is believed to be intent on adding Antoine Griezmann to his ranks for €100million ahead of next season, but according to Diario Gol Messi wants Alaba at the Camp Nou.
The 25-year-old Austria defender is currently playing for Bayern Munich and has made 31 appearances for the Bundesliga champions this term.
He is under contract until 2021 after signing a new five-year deal two season’s ago and he has no release clause in his Bayern deal.
Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have been linked with the 60-cap player and in 2016 Real apparently saw an €80million bid for him turned down.
With that in mind Alaba could cost prospective buyers over €100million in the summer, but such is the player’s versatility Messi is sure he would be an excellent addition.
Alaba can play at left-back, centre-back and in a holding midfield role – a position he is said to prefer and if Barca can promise him that they he may well be tempted by a move to La Liga.
Alaba, barring a spell on loan at Hoffenheim, has spent his entire career at Bayern, but earlier this month he admitted he could leave for a new adventure.
“I am aware that I one day will have to make the decision, and I still feel great here,” Alaba told Kurier. “But I can also imagine taking a different path, making the next step or seeking a new challenge.
“But I leave that open for now. I have goals for this season I want to reach. That’s why there is no place for those thoughts right now.”
