Naby Keita has revealed how fit he is ahead of Guinea’s African Cup of Nations after missing out on Liverpool’s Champions League final victory.
Keita suffered a groin injury in the first leg of the Champions League semi final against Barcelona which ended his season but having been named in Guinea’s provisional squad for AFCON, there is hope the nations captain will be fit for the tournament.
Keita has 31 caps for Guinea and has scored 5 goals.
“I am very happy to meet my team-mates. I think I’m going to work now,” he said.
“As I’m here now, I’m going to train with the team to see what’s next.
“To reassure the fans, my team-mates and the coach, I think I’ll be ready for the first match for Guinea. I am 100 percent motivated.”
Keita endured a stop start season for the Reds after joining from RB Leipzig last summer, having initially signed the summer prior. He made 32 appearances across all competitions, scoring 3 goals, however, the first of them didn’t come until April.
He struggled to nail down a role in Jurgen Klopp’s starting 11, losing out to the impressive quintet of Fabinho, Gini Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Xherdan Shaqiri.
More is expected from the Guinean next season and with the return of Alex Oxlade- Chamberlain, competition will be even more fierce.
Before their tournament opener, Guinea warm up against Benin (June 11) and Egypt (June 16), with Keita expected to feature in the latter.
