Liverpool and Arsenal are leading Italian giants AC Milan in the race for a Bundesliga star, according to reports.

An exclusive from Calciomercato.com suggests that the Premier League duo are leading the chase for Schalke midfielder Max Meyer.

The 22-year-old is attracting interest due to the fact he is reportedly likely to leave Schalke as a free agent at the end of the season.

Reports in Germany last week suggested that Meyer was poised to sign a new contract with the Bundesliga club.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is a known admirer of the player, while Gunners chief Arsene Wenger is still looking to strengthen his midfield options despite the recent arrival of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mesut Ozil penning a new deal with the club.

AC Milan are also said to be keen, but the report in Bild claims that Meyer has been offered a €5.5million-a-year deal to stay at Schalke.

Calciomercato however believe that the German international would prefer to play in England, hence why both the Reds and the Gunners have a better chance than AC Milan.

Meyer has scored just once and provided a single assist in 21 appearances this season but is still regarded as one of the brightest young talents in European football.
