Liverpool and Arsenal attacking target Samuel Chukwueze has revealed that Chelsea are his favourite team in the Premier League, and how they even left him crying.
The 20-year-old Nigerian winger has impressed since breaking into the Villarreal first team in 2018, and is now one of the most in-demand youngsters in La Liga.
Reports indicated that Liverpool wanted to add him to their Premier League-leading squad in January, only to see their €35m bid rejected – an offer that was €30m less than Chukwueze’s release clause.
Liverpool are not the only English side keeping an eye on how Chukwueze develops, with his teammate Santi Cazorla confirming that his old club Arsenal have been asking him for information about the winger.
But Chukwueze has now revealed that he has an affection for one of Arsenal’s biggest rivals, fellow London side Chelsea.
“My favourite team in England is Chelsea,” Chukwueze said in an Instagram Live quoted on Football Espana.
“I was supporting Chelsea when I was young. When Chelsea lost that Champions League final against Manchester United, I was crying all through the night.”
Chukwueze’s previously hinted at his fondness for Chelsea when revealing that ex-Blues winger Arjen Robben was his hero, while he has also declared his own Premier League ambitions.
“Playing in England is still an ambition for me,” he said. “I need to keep on working hard and to keep improving. I really want to play in England.”
“[Robben is] the king, to me. He’s the perfect player. I watch so many YouTube clips of him, and there are so many things I can learn from watching him.
“On the way to games, even now, I will still stick on clips of Robben and watch his goals, his dribbling. He’s my inspiration, one of the greatest.
“I like to be me, and of course you have to be yourself, but you need to learn from people like him. What a player!”
