Liverpool and Arsenal named as suitors for frozen-out Premier League star

Todd Cantwell Joao Cancelo August 2021

Liverpool and Arsenal are keeping themselves up to date on the situation surrounding Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell, claims a report.

The former England Under-21 man is out of contract with the Canaries in June 2022. The 23-year-old does have a 12-month option to extend that deal, but there have been no indications of the midfielder doing so.

And Fichajes, via Caught Offside, report that Cantwell “does not want to renew his link with Norwich City”.

The source also claim that the reason for the player’s recent absence is down the fact that he has not pledged his future to the East Anglian club.

Cantwell was not in the squad for the last two games against Everton and Burnley. With the club citing a “personal problem”.

“Todd Cantwell is also out as he has missed the whole week’s training, with a personal problem,” read the club’s website last month.

The midfielder though was only as sub in the previous two games for Daniel Farke’s men.

Now the Spanish outlet suggest Liverpool and Arsenal are keen on Cantwell.

Apparently Cantwell, who has risen up through the ranks at Carrow Road, “is on the list of several important teams in England”.

The Gunners have the player “in their sights due to his individual quality”. Mikel Arteta is looking to reshape the Arsenal squad. And Cantwell, who recently appeared against the Gunners as a sub, is of interest.

As per the report, “Liverpool have also shown interest in Todd Cantwell”, who is looking at taking the next step in his career.

Liverpool join the race for Monaco midfielder Aurelian Tchouameni

Liverpool have reportedly joined the race with Chelsea and Juventus for Monaco midfielder Aurelian Tchouameni, with more news on Karim Adeyemi and Antonio Rudiger.

Jurgen Klopp lost Xherdan Shaqiri and Gini Wijnaldum in the summer and no replacements were signed.

The Dereham-born player was a reported target for Aston Villa and Leeds in the summer.

However, pundit Noel Whelan believes it was Cantwell’s agent who was pushing that potential deal.

Norwich won’t hold Cantwell back

“From what I have heard, was it Cantwell’s agent that was pushing that one? That is what I’ve been hearing on the grapevine,” he told Football Insider. “Leeds might be interested in him, but they weren’t desperate for him. It’s more his agent pushing that one.”

Norwich sporting director Stuart Webber though says they will not stand in the way of Cantwell.

“It’s important that he gets a breather now, because he’s played a hell of a lot of football in these past 18 months,” he said in May. “Then he comes back with a mindset of ‘you know what, I’m going to fight to keep Norwich in the Premier League’.

“Or maybe a fantastic offer comes in and he thinks, ‘you know what, I’ve got to do what’s right for me’, and I think, either way, as a club, we always look after our players.

“When the time comes and any of these guys need a new contract that they’ll get it. And they’ll be well rewarded. They know that because we’ve got a great track record of doing that. But also, if it’s time to go, it’s time to go as well and we fully respect that.”
