Former Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness says Liverpool and Manchester United are trying to “blackmail” the German champions into selling Thiago Alcantara.
Several reports in recent months have claimed Jurgen Klopp‘s side are keen on the Spanish midfielder.
After speculation over a first bid from the Reds emerged, Klopp admitted that he could not end such talk. And while expressing his admiration for the player, he insisted nothing had emerged on the transfer front.
The uncertainty over Thiago’s future comes after he performed a drastic U-turn on a new Bayern deal. Now, he reportedly has an initial agreement in place on a move to Anfield.
Speaking to Sport1, Hoeness reiterated that Bayern have received no official contact from any club about Thiago. However, he tipped Liverpool to make an underhand offer towards the end of the transfer window.
“It is a difficult situation,” Hoeness said. “A while ago we agreed on a new four-year contract. Some days later he said: ‘I’m looking for a new challenge.’ Which is totally okay.
“I think he obviously has an agreement with Liverpool or Manchester United or both of them. Now both clubs are bluffing, and no one has contacted Bayern Munich officially.
“From my point of view, that has no style. They’re trying to blackmail us, by waiting until the last week, when they’re going to make a cheap offer.
“In that case FC Bayern have to ask themselves the question: do they want to go along with that or do they tell the player that he has to stay.
“It’s going to be a hot three weeks until [the transfer window closes on] October 5.”
WIJNALDUM’S FUTURE THROWN INTO THE MIX
The speculation over Thiago also comes amid uncertainty over Georginio Wijnaldum’s Anfield future.
The Dutchman has entered the final year of his contract and talks between himself and the club have allegedly broken down.
Indeed, Klopp said on Friday that it remains an open situation but he did not appear concerned by the lack of clarity.
However, more recent reports suggest Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman has his eyes on another Liverpool star.
