Liverpool put feelers out for ‘blistering’ Villa raid which ticks ‘many boxes’

Liverpool have registered initial interest in a transfer swoop for Aston Villa and England striker Ollie Watkins, according to a report.

Watkins entered the radar of a number of top clubs following his Championship form for Brentford. However, Villa took the ambitious step of signing him for a club-record £28million in September. What’s more, he has taken to the Premier League in fantastic fashion, scoring 12 goals and assisting three others.

The 25-year-old also recently earned his first England appearance, capping his debut with a goal.

As such, Watkin’s stock has risen significantly, with Football Insider now claiming that Liverpool have shown interest.

The source claims that signing a new striker is one of Liverpool’s key priorities for the summer transfer window.

Reds chiefs want a player who can ‘strengthen’ the club’s attack, which has unusually struggled for goals.

Indeed, Sadio Mane has dropped off while Roberto Firmino’s general lack of goals has continued this term.

Football Insider adds that Watkins would tick ‘many boxes’ as regards Liverpool‘s transfer criteria. More specifically, his ‘blistering’ pace, ability to play at a high tempo and his solid finishing has impressed club bosses.

Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith says Ollie Watkins is 'still smiling' after scoring on his England debut against San Marino last week.

While Villa boss Dean Smith has used Watkins as a central striker, he can also play out wide.

Furthermore, the player’s ‘mobility’ and ‘aerial prowess’ have made Liverpool think about a raid this summer.

The report does not state the fee that Villa would expect. In fact, they are looking to keep hold of their star talents – as well as Jack Grealish – to build on a strong season.

Watkins has proved a crucial part of their campaign, netting a hat-trick in the 7-2 win over Liverpool in September.

The England international also scored in the recent 2-1 defeat to Jurgen Klopp‘s men at Anfield.

Liverpool told to launch Leeds transfer swoop

Kalvin Phillips, Leeds United

Meanwhile, one pundit has called for Liverpool to sign Kalvin Phillips to shore up their midfield ranks.

The Reds are likely to lose Georginio Wijnaldum at the end of the season, with his contract expiring.

According to Emile Heskey, Phillips would be a solid replacement.
