Liverpool, Chelsea impress in Premier League’s annual table

Liverpool: Tipped for Boxing Day delight

Liverpool: Tipped for victory over Swansea

The Premier League’s annual table has revealed plenty of interesting little insights into the form teams and the strugglers of 2016.

The table, courtesy of stats website transfer markt, shows Chelsea to be the Premier League’s most successful team of the calendar year, having won 21 of their 36 matches played.

Antonio Conte’s men are currently enjoying their longest ever winning run in the Premier League after clocking up 11 successive victories – but their ‘achievement’ in finishing top of the table should not be underestimated given their struggles of last season in defence of their title.

Although there are still two rounds of games to be played before the calendar year is out, the annual Premier League table also reveals….

  • Despite their remarkable title triumph last season, Leicester are only 8th on the 2016 table and have won just seven more points than current strugglers West Ham
  • Liverpool are 2016’s top scorers, having plundered 82 goals at an average rate of 2.27 goals per game
  • Watford are 2016’s lowest scorers, having scored just 37 goals from their 36 games played
  • Southampton have been surprisingly consistent and have won just three points fewer over the calendar year than Manchester United and Manchester City
  • Crystal Palace have won just 26 points from their 36 games – that’s just six more than Newcastle, who were relegated in May
  • The Eagles have also conceded the most goals over the calendar year in 67, with Swansea (65) and Stoke (60) next worst
  • Sunderland, despite their annual battle with relegation, have won just two fewer points than mid-table specialists Stoke
  • West Brom are 2016’s draw specialists, having shared the points in 13 of their 36 matches played
  • Much was made of Aston Villa’s struggles last season – but Hull aren’t faring much better this time around
