Liverpool have scrapped a friendly with Schalke after being handed the job of opening the Premier League season on Friday, August 9.
Paul Joyce of The Times reported that the Anfield club were “considering scrapping” the Anfield friendly with David Wagner’s new club because it was too close to the opening game with Norwich at Anfield.
The Reds have a busy pre-season schedule, including fixtures against Dortmund, Sevilla, Sporting and Napoli and intially arranged the date with Schalke due to Jurgen Klopp’s friendship with former Huddersfield boss Wagner.
Now though, the Reds have cut the fixture because they do not have much room to manoeuvre. They face Chelsea in the Super Cup final in Istanbul on August 14, before facing Southampton at Anfield in the Premier League in August 17.
