Man Utd frustrated as LaLiga defender packs his bags for Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp Liverpool TEAMtalk

Liverpool have reportedly overtaken Manchester United in the race for Celta Vigo starlet Stefan Bajcetic and could complete a deal soon.

Reports last week suggested that Bajcetic was in line for a move to Old Trafford. But it now appears that United’s rivals have swooped in.

According to reports in Spain, via Sport Witness, Liverpool sent officials to strike an agreement on Wednesday.

The Premier League champions are keen to strengthen for the future, and are taking the opportunity to sign international talent while they can.

Bajcetic is a 16-year-old centre-back who has come through the Celta Vigo academy ranks. Now, he seems set for a move to England.

The defender could even complete his move to Liverpool imminently. According to La Voz De Galicia, it is a matter of hours, not days, before the transfer is officially announced.

Liverpool have to agree the transfer before the end of December because of rule changes that will come into place after Brexit. There seems to be optimism they will cross the finishing line in time.

The report also reveals that Liverpool were interested in Bajcetic even before United, despite news of their rivals’ pursuit of him emerging first.

In fact, United were “very close” to agreeing a deal for Bajcetic themselves. However, his agent wanted them to agree a compensation fee with his current club.

Liverpool have taken their opportunity, though, and are now closing in on another defensive recruit for the youth ranks.

Scanlon signs up for Liverpool

Earlier on Wednesday, Calum Scanlon confirmed he had signed a contract with the Reds.

The 15-year-old has moved to Merseyside from Birmingham City and will initially join the academy ranks.

The fee is reportedly in the region of £500,000.
