Thomas Lemar: Subject of transfer tug-of-war

Liverpool and Atletico Madrid are said to battle it out for the signature of Monaco starlet Thomas Lemar, reports in France state.

The midfielder made 34 appearances across all competitions this season for the French club, scoring five goals in the process, and his performances have attracted interest from Liverpool.

L’Equipe report that the Merseysiders are not isolated in their interest, as Champions League finalists Atletico Madrid are also interested.

It was reported earlier this month that Liverpool have already contacted Lemar’s representatives to discuss a possible deal, with Monaco understood to value the player at £10m.

Lemar, who has a contract with Monaco until 2020, remains humble despite a rapid rise to fame.

“I know my strengths, but I didn’t expect to explode on to the scene like this,” he confessed.

“I wanted to have some game time and I’m getting that now. It’s up to me to try to keep my performances up.”

His former teammate Alaeddine Yahia commented on the ability of the player for Ligue 1’s ‘Rising Star’ feature from March 2016.

“His left foot is amazing. It’s like a hand – he puts the ball where he wants.

“Our goalkeeper Remy is used to Thomas’ free kicks and he anticipates a bit. Usually he curls it over the wall. He hardly ever shoots across the goal like that. It shows that he’s improving – he put it right in the top corner.”
