Liverpool could be kicked out of the the Carabao Cup after it emerged one of their players from Wednesday night may not have been eligible.

The EFL has opened an investigation, as first reported by The Athletic, into the eligibility of 22-year-old Pedro Chirivella, who was a second-half sub in the 2-0 win over the MK Dons.

Jurgen Klopp made 11 changes to his side for the League Cup third-round tie, but it has now emerged that Chirivella, who came on for Naby Keita with just 27 minutes remaining, did not have sufficient international clearance.

A comment sent to the Liverpool Echo, from the club, read: “The Club are aware of a potential administrative issue pertaining to one of our players.

“We are working with the relevant authorities in order to establish the facts of the matter and will be making no further comment until this process is complete.”

Looking back at previous incidents though in 2014 the EFL hit Sunderland with a fine after they fielded striker Ji Dong-Won in the competition – also against MK Dons.

The local paper also claims “expulsion seems unlikely” and the club are likely to present a strong mitigation.
