Liverpool hero Lucas backs Firmino to make stunning piece of Reds history

Former Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has backed Reds forward Roberto Firmino to break his record for the most appearances for the club by a Brazilian.

Lucas, who signed for Liverpool from Gremio in 2007 with Rafael Benitez in charge, stayed at Anfield for a decade and racked up 346 appearances in all competitions.

Firmino, meanwhile, moved to Merseyside in 2015 and has made 228 outings in his time working under both Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp.

Speaking to DAZN (via Inside Futbol), Lucas insisted that his 28-year-old compatriot will go on to break his record and achieve a remarkable piece of history for Liverpool.

“I have the record for appearances for a Brazilian,” Lucas said.

“But I think Firmino will surpass me because he plays 50 games a season. I am glad, he is an incredible boy.”

Firmino already holds the record for being the highest-scoring Brazilian in Premier League history with 56 goals, four more than former Red Philippe Coutinho.

As well as his goals, Firmino has provided 39 Premier League assists in his 162 appearances in the top flight.

This season, the Brazilian has netted 10 goals and laid on 12 others in 36 outings in all competitions.

Liverpool are currently enjoying time off as part of the Premier League’s winter break and return to action next Saturday when they play Norwich City at Carrow Road.

Klopp‘s men, who are 22 points clear at the top of the table, need six wins from their final 13 games to clinch the club’s first league title in 30 years.

While most players are enjoying a well-deserved holiday, goalkeeper Alisson Becker has decided to train with Fluminese, the club in Brazil where his brother Muriel plays.

Alisson is determined to keep himself on top form ahead of the final stages of the season, with Liverpool also well in the hunt for a seventh Champions League crown.
