Kylian Mbappe has revealed he’s “unsure” over whether to sign a new deal at PSG amid startling new claims that he is ‘keen to play for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool’.
Neymar and Mbappe both find themselves out of contract in the French capital in just 18 months time.
Talks over new deals for both are well underway. With time no longer on PSG’s side, however, sporting director Leonardo explained why he won’t beg either to stay.
And following Friday’s 4-0 win over Montpellier, Mbappe gave his most open and honest intervew yet.
The 22-year-old showed his class with two goals and an assist in the match.
And despite admitting his happiness at the club, he stated he remains unsure over whether to sign an extension.
“We are talking with the club, to find a project,” Mbappe said. “I am thinking about it because if I sign and extend my contract, it is to commit myself on the long term to PSG. “And I am very happy here. I have always been very happy here.
“The fans and the club have always helped me and just for that, I will always be grateful to the club.”
While Neymar also remains hugely important to PSG, the club knows that Mbappe is the one who could command a huge fee this summer.
And while he would have just 12 months left on his deal come the summer, Mbappe would still command a fee well in excess of €100m.
The 22-year-old is regularly linked with moves to Real Madrid, while Liverpool are also said to be in the hunt. As such, a report claimed the Reds had a calculated financial plan to lure the France forward to Anfield.
It gets even better for Liverpool though. Were his contract to wind down to 12 months, talk of a move to Anfield will heighten. Indeed, as per ESPN, the forward ‘would be keen to play’ for Liverpool under Klopp.
While the financial burden around the deal could prove problematic for Liverpool, Mbappe’s outrageous flirting with them has always been clear.
Mbappe wants time to think
Despite the speculation, Mbappe insisted after Friday’s match that he still needs time to decide what to do.
“I just want to think about what I want to do and where I want to be in the next few years. That’s what I am thinking about and I know I will have to make a choice soon,” added Mbappe.
“If I had made my mind up today, I would have said it. It is not that I want to gain time or something. It is just that I am thinking about it.
“I don’t want to extend my contract and say a year later that I want to leave because I didn’t want to sign the new deal in the first place. If I extend, it is to stay.”
Despite that, Leonardo is confident both Mbappe and Neymar are happy in the French capital and he believes they’ll extend their contracts.
“I hope that they are convinced that PSG is a good place for a high level and ambitious player,” Leonardo told France Football.
“We just need to find an agreement between their desires, their demands, our expectations and our means. We are not going to beg: ‘Please, stay.’ It is more calculated than that.
“Those who really want to stay will stay. We speak regularly and I have good feelings on both of those matters.”
