Liverpool’s stars let out a “crackle of excitement” after learning the club had agreed a deal to sign Thiago Alcantara, according to a report.
After months of speculation about the Bayern Munich midfielder’s future, Liverpool made their move on Thursday.
Initial reports revealed the Reds had stepped up their interest, before the two clubs agreed a deal. Thiago will cost an initial £20million, potentially rising to £25million.
According to Daily Mail reporter Dominic King, there was huge excitement among the Liverpool stars after learning of the rapid developments.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp also declared his admiration for Thiago, although that was at last week’s press conference.
Several pundits have earmarked the need for Liverpool to strengthen while on top. The Reds cantered to their first league title in 30 years last season but have watched Manchester City strengthen significantly since then.
Jamie Carragher feels Thiago will offer “something different” to the Premier League champions.
“Liverpool have got five or six midfield players – they rotate well because they need energy in that position – but a lot of the players are pretty similar,” the former defender said.
“Thiago would be something different – less in energy but more technical – and I think he would be a really good addition.
“Liverpool are world-class at the top end of the pitch, world-class in terms of their defence and goalkeeper; I think they’re top-class in midfield.
“Something could be added technically and Thiago fits the bill, so fingers crossed he comes.”
Bayern Munich head coach Hansi Flick has also offered his congratulations to Liverpool for securing a deal.
The German said: “Thiago is an exceptional player who spent seven hugely successful years here.
“He’s a wonderful person and an outstanding professional. It was very emotional today when he said goodbye to us all.”
THIAGO TO LIVEN UP LIVERPOOL’S WINDOW
Prior to the Thiago developments, Liverpool’s deal for Kostas Tsimikas was their only move.
The left-back will provide important cover for Andy Robertson but many pundits had called on a marquee addition to shake Klopp’s side up.
It remains unclear whether Liverpool will now target further additions.
Klopp is a man light in defence following Dejan Lovren’s move to Zenit St Petersburg.
