Former Liverpool star John Barnes has praised the impact of manager Jurgen Klopp on the club’s transfer business.

The Reds spent over £160million this summer to bring in midfielder Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita, as well as goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

“Jurgen Klopp is trusted so much by the Liverpool fans, that if he wants to make a signing for a multi-million pounds, the fans will feel confident that we are competing. Other clubs have to sign big money players to be thought about like that,” Barnes told

“If Jurgen Klopp signs Micky Mouse players, he will still develop a strategy to get the most out of these players. Any player that Klopp signs, the fans have faith in him and trust his judgement and will feel confident that they can compete.

“Whereas If you look at other clubs like Arsenal, if they make signings for 50 or 60 million pounds, fans will be very negative and say they’re lacking ambition.

“Any player Klopp signs, is getting that support, and if you sign for Liverpool you are without doubt a good player, whether you cost 5 million or 100 million pounds. That is the nature of football. If Jurgen Klopp signs him, we are trusted to know that he will do well at Liverpool.”

Barnes then talked about the return of midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: “It’s a big boost to see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain back. It’s that time of the season where you want your quality players to be fighting for a first team place

“Liverpool have had a couple of injuries in defence, so that is a bit restricting on the squad. However, seeing these players coming back to full fitness this time of the season, it’s like having a new player with a drive where others may be getting fatigued.

“Alex coming back, will add a lot to the midfield where Liverpool’s main strength is. It’s crucial to see him return, and I’m sure his presence amongst the rest of the player will go a long way to helping the squad.”

The star of World in Motion also discussed the title race between Liverpool and Manchester City.

“If Liverpool go 7 points clear, for me that would have made them favourites, but Man City are favourites as it stands. Yes, Liverpool do have a game in hand, which if they win will go 3 points clear, but this is not important in the grand scheme of things.

“What is important; is the game against Man United, if we beat Man United, we haven’t won the league. But we just need to take each game as it comes rather than thinking about who the title favourites are.”
