Schalke defender Ozan Kabak has been linked with Liverpool once more, according to an Italian source.
The Italian angle has emerged because the 20-year-old Kabak is on the wanted list of AC Milan.
Milan wanted Kabak in the summer window and reportedly remain keen on the Turkey international.
Sport Media Set report that Liverpool are keen on the centre-back as they look for cover for Virgil van Dijk.
Jurgen Klopp, who referred to Van Dijk as the best defender in the world in the lead up to Wednesday’s game with Ajax, will likely be without the Dutchman for the rest of the season.
Van Dijk has torn his ACL and The Athletic journalist David Ornstein has suggested the damage could even be worse than first feared.
He has stated that the Dutchman’s recovery may be further away than originally claimed.
The Italian source have little detail on Kabak other than that Klopp is “aiming” for the player. The German club want €30m for Kabak and the source say the English champions are “one more in rival” in the pursuit of the player.
Schalke open to selling
Only last month Bundesliga journalist Chris Williams claimed Schalke’s Kabak was top of Liverpool’s wanted list. And the injury to Van Dijk has accelerated their need for cover.
Williams claimed Klopp was interested in Kabak due to his exciting potential and impressive displays for the Bundesliga outfit. He’s seen as being at the right age to improve further but be content enough with a squad role at Anfield.
Publicly, Schalke are adamant not of their squad are for sale. But privately, Williams claims the Royal Blues would be willing to sell Kabak for the right price.
He tweeted: “Schalke sources confirm Liverpool have contacted them about Ozan Kabak.
“Official line – squad is settled & not for disruption now season is underway. Privately told an offer around €25m could force a rethink.”
Kazak joined Schalke in a €15m move from Stuttgart only last year. But his value has doubled with some assured displays.
He is under contract until 2024.
