Liverpool make brilliant gesture on Naby Keita’s Reds debut

Liverpool have told Chester they can keep 100% of their gate receipts from their pre-season friendly next week in a match expected to mark the debut of Naby Keita.

The Champions League runners-up travel to tackle their non-league Swansway Chester Stadium on Saturday July 7 – and Jurgen Klopp has promised to name a strong travelling squad, despite the absence of several stars on World Cup duty.

And among the Reds squad will be summer recruit Keita, who this week finalised his £52.75million switch from RB Leizig – and soon set about following in the footsteps of an iconic Reds legend.

Keita’s possible debut has already created quite the attention for the match and a 4,500 sell out is expected for a game that also marks the first match in charge for Chester managerial duo Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley.

And Chester’s finances will also be given a helping hand by Liverpool’s visit, with their neighbours told they can keep 100% of the gate receipts, which in pre-season friendlies, is normally a 50/50 split.

“It is a great gesture from Liverpool and we will receive 100% of the gate receipts,” said Chester chairman David Harrington-Wright.

“We have hosted their under-23s and women’s team here and we have a great relationship with them and they have been absolutely first class with us, they really have.

“Liverpool also know that they will be playing on a superb surface and that has been a major plus in them wanting to use us time and again and we are grateful for the support we have received from them over this and the gesture of allowing us to keep the profits from the game.

“It will be a hugely exciting day. Liverpool have told us they will be bringing a strong squad of first teamers, those who haven’t been at the World Cup.”

As well as Keita, Liverpool could also select the likes of Loris Karius, Gini Wijnaldum, James Milner and Virgil Van Dijk, while Fabinho could also feature, having arrived in a big-money move from Monaco at the start of the summer.
