Liverpool will monitor the progress of Ben White this season with a view to making a bid next summer, according to a report.
White is ready to embark on his first season in the Premier League after signing a new contract with Brighton.
The defender seriously impressed on loan at Leeds United last season, helping them win promotion. However, despite making a number of bids, Leeds could not take him back to Elland Road.
Instead, Brighton stood their ground, and managed to secure White’s future by tying him down to a new four-year contract.
It is likely that White’s name will appear in the gossip columns again in the coming months, though. Leeds were not the only team tracking him, with Liverpool also watching on.
And according to the Liverpool Echo, the Premier League champions will be watching White’s every move this season.
Liverpool have already scouted White in the past, having watched him for Leeds last season. Now, they will continue to monitor his development in the top flight.
White has been at Brighton since joining their academy in 2014. However, he is yet to make a Premier League appearance for them. That will change this season.
If he continues his upward trajectory, then a move to a bigger club like Liverpool could materialise.
While his new contract means there is no chance of him leaving this summer, Liverpool are prepared to play the waiting game.
According to the Echo, the Reds could make a bid for White next summer. A full season in the top flight will prove the defender’s credentials, after which Liverpool will have a clearer picture of whether or not they want to sign him.
White was one of the leading candidates to replace Dejan Lovren at Anfield this year. However, Liverpool were unsure about his price tag, after Brighton rejected a bid of around £30m from Leeds.
The Echo claim that Liverpool could reconsider that stance next summer, by which time they will have a better idea of the financial aspects of the deal.
