Liverpool join Man Utd in ‘front row’ for surprise defensive reinforcement
Liverpool have emerged as surprise contenders in the race to sign Nikola Milenkovic from Fiorentina, according to a report.
Milenkovic is one of the most promising defenders in Serie A. At the age of 23, he already has bundles of experience but ample room to develop still.
Wednesday’s European papers suggested that Manchester United and Manchester City were set to rival each other for Milenkovic’s signature.
However, since then, another Premier League suitor has emerged. According to FiorentinaNews, Liverpool have joined rivals United in the “front row” for Milenkovic.
The defender is out of contract in 2022, which means he is likely to move this summer. If Fiorentina cannot convince him to extend his contract, they may have to cash in on him.
That could prompt a transfer battle in the summer, as Milenkovic will have no shortage of suitors.
Liverpool are now said to be among them. Despite signing Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak in January, they could be on the lookout for additional defensive reinforcements.
Kabak is only on loan at the club from Schalke. Liverpool have an option to buy him, but if they do not activate it, they may seek other targets.

It seems unlikely that Liverpool would need an extra defender if Kabak stays. However, the opportunity to sign Milenkovic for a reduced fee may prove tempting.
What’s more, Milenkovic is able to play as a right-back as well, so could cover two positions.

The Serbia international has more than 100 appearances for Fiorentina to his name. He also has 26 caps for his country.
Milenkovic was also linked with Tottenham back in December, but there is no mention of them in the report from FiorentinaNews.
Instead, they seem to class Liverpool and Man Utd as the main suitors. It is not yet clear who is leading the race definitively, though.
Ben Davies strengths stated
One of the defenders who will be hoping to convince Liverpool before they consider a move for Milenkovic is January arrival Davies.
The centre-back made the surprise step up from Championship club Preston. He is yet to make his debut, but will be hoping for some chances before the end of the season.
Earlier this week, Liverpool were told what they can expect from their new man by someone who used to play against him.
