Liverpool, Man Utd to miss out on €15m deal as strike target tipped for shock Spain switch

The chances of Gent striker Jonathan David moving to the Premier League have taken another hit, as reports indicate he could move to La Liga instead.

Canada international David was in prolific form this season for Gent, before the Belgian season was cancelled – and his form has alerted a number of top clubs across Europe.

Liverpool were believed to have sent scouts to watch him when he scored against Roma in the Europa League recently, with Jurgen Klopp in search of attacking depth.

Manchester United and Arsenal have also been mentioned as potential destinations for the 20-year-old, although David has vowed to consider his next move carefully, and does not appear to be considering a move to the Premier League at present.

His next step could take him to La Liga, though, and talk of the potential price of the deal could see the likes of Liverpool, United and Arsenal missing out on a bargain.

According to Estadio Deportivo (via Football Espana), Gent have now cut David’s price tag to just €15m, and that has attracted new interest from La Liga outfit Real Betis.

The New York-born striker hinted recently that his preferred next step may be to move to Germany’s Bundesliga in order to continue his progression – although the Premier League remains in his sights later down the line.

“It’s time for me to move and go somewhere where I can keep developing and get to the potential that I have,” he told Sky Sports.

“The league that would suit me the most right now is the Bundesliga. It’s similar to the Belgian league in terms of the tempo and the physicality, but obviously the quality is higher in Germany and there is more competition.”

That followed an admission about his desire to reach major heights with a potential later move to England. He revealed in April: “I want to become one of the best strikers in the world. That’s my goal.

“The Premier League is the best in the world and most competitive so obviously that is somewhere I would love to play in the future.”

Whether La Liga would be a serious option for the youngster remains to be seen, although a move to Betis could give him the regular gametime at a higher level that he craves – at least more so than if he were to join a Premier League side or fellow interested party Barcelona.
