3.20pm: GUARDIOLA’S LIVERPOOL WARNING

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says his side will come back fighting next season after an under-par performance this term.

However, after handing the title over to Liverpool last week, the Spaniard insists he will be back to get revenge.

2.07pm: GARY NEVILLE BEGRUDGLINGLY COMPLIMENTS LIVERPOOL

The Sky Sports pundit went into hiding not long after Liverpool won the title. And you can hardly blame him. See Jurgen Klopp and Co cruise to glory probably hurts him as much as anyone.

Finally though, the full-back has spoken and he has given Klopp and Liverpool numerous plaudits! How sporting!

“Everything at the football club comes from the manager, he sets the tone for everybody, the fan base, the ownership, he sets the tone for the players. He has basically galvanised Liverpool over a three-year period, brought everybody with him and put a brilliant team together.”

“The club’s recruitment has been absolutely spot-on, precise, laser-focused,” he added.

“Every single player they have made count. Every single player has fit a mould, every single player fits the principles of Klopp. There’s been no veering away. When [Christian] Benteke was seen as not fitting the profile, he was moved aside.

“He’s got quick, energetic strikers who make the perfect runs. He’s got a defence that is formidable. The goalkeeper too – he is the best in the world at this moment in time.”

Victor Osimhen TEAMtalk

Jurgen Klopp remains “very interested” in Lille striker Victor Osimhen, according to reports in France.

At the start of May Telefoot claimed Lille had received an offer for the 21-year-old striker, with Les Cahiers du Football editor Abdellah Boulma later caliming Tottenham were the bidders.

Osimhen’s agent Ariyo Igbayilola later revealed that the striker would not consider a move unless Harry Kane left the north London club.

Meanwhile, Le 10 Sport had reported that Liverpool were leading the race for Osimhen and now L’Equipe state Liverpool’s interest remains.

11.50am: ALDRIDGE HAS A POP AT PEP

John Aldridge believes Liverpool have shattered the Pep Guardiola myth after their dominant Premier League title triumph.

Aldridge believes German coach Jurgen Klopp has put his Manchester City rival into the shade this season.

Guardiola led City to the Premier League title in each of the previous two seasons, picking up a record 100 points in 2017/18 and 98 points in retaining the trophy in 2018/19, finishing just one point ahead of Liverpool.

Now Liverpool goalscoring great Aldridge, who himself won the old First Division crown with the Anfield giants in the 1987/88 season, believes that the dominance shown by Klopp’s side is a sign of things to come.

Having collected 86 points from 31 games, Liverpool will break City’s Premier League points record if they win five of their final seven games. The next of which sees them travel to The Etihad on Thursday where Liverpool will receive a guard of honour.

“We all recall the eulogies that flowed in the direction of Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City side as they became the first in the Premier League era to reach 100-points for a season when they won the title a couple of years back,” Aldridge told the Sunday World.

11.30am: MELLOR SAYS LIVERPOOL WILL BACK KLOPP

Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor believes the board will be willing to sign off a marquee signing this summer if Jurgen Klopp insists.

The Premier League champions pulled the plug on a deal for Timo Werner just after Easter after the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic set it.

Chief executive Peter Moore admitted in April that there was “a massive downturn in revenue” while outgoings remained throughout the crisis.

Boss Jurgen Klopp though has since confirmed the Reds will not be too active in the summer window, this week admitting: “Covid has of course influenced both sides with ins and outs, that is completely normal.

“It’s just not likely that it will be the most busy summer in the world. But maybe at a later point in the year, if the transfer window is still open and we know more, then maybe something could happen.”

However, pundit Mellor thinks if Klopp was persistent enough with Michael Edwards and FSG then he would get a marque signing sanctioned.

“It’s exciting to see Liverpool linked with them as they are all excellent players,” he told GentingBet.

“Koulibaly is one of the best centre-backs in world football.

“I think the club has shown they will back Klopp – so if he really feels one of these players will improve the team and squad, I’d expect them to back him in the market this summer.”

10am: LIVERPOOL THE WINNERS

9.20am: AFCON BOOST

Elsewhere, Liverpool have received a boost in that the Africa Cup of Nations has been suspended until 2022.

The tournament was moved to the summer in 2019 in what was billed as a permanent change.

However, late last year, it was moved back again to the winter and now, it has been scrapped altogether for 2022 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The switch means Liverpool will not lose Sadio Mane (Senegal) and Mohamed Salah (Egypt) for a significant period next season.

Victor Osimhen TEAMtalk

Reports in recent months have claimed Liverpool are keen on Lille striker Victor Osimhen.
