Liverpool are putting the finishing touches to a bid reported to be £15m for a player who could be the long-term answer to a nagging issue.

Liverpool are facing a number of questions regarding player personnel heading into next season. Injuries have ravaged their squad, but a collective loss of form has also hampered their campaign.

The latest report gave the clearest indication yet where Georginio Wijnaldum’s future lays after a major Barcelona update.

Questions remain over the long-term viability of Roberto Firmino, while fringe players Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri are facing uncertain futures.

Centre-back will be another area under the microscope. Virgil van Dijk is on course to return for pre-season training, but may find himself partnered with a superstar new recruit.

Each of the aforementioned positions are obvious issues, but one place in Liverpool’s squad has not been addressed for years.

That is the role of back-up goalkeeper to undisputed number one, Alisson Becker.

Since Simon Mignolet’s departure back to Belgium, the Reds have not been able to call upon a reliable second choice.

Loris Karius remains out on loan, while Adrian has been prone to errors when starting.

Youngster Caoimhin Kelleher has shown promise, but the role of back-up goalkeeper is rarely entrusted to someone so young.

With Alisson suffering injuries more than most in his position, acquiring a dependable back-up is of vital importance.

A report on Friday revealed Liverpool have reignited their scouting mission on Turkish stopper Ugurcan Cakir.

The 24-year-old has long been rumoured to be on the Reds’ radar, though they will face stiff competition from a Premier League trio.

Now, Goal (citing Turkish publication Sabah) state that Liverpool are ‘preparing to make a €17 million (£15m) bid’ for the Trabzonspor player.

On top of the interest from other English sides, RB Leipzig and Sevilla are also deemed to be monitoring the situation.

Muller looking to follow in Thiago’s footsteps?

Meanwhile, Thomas Muller has alerted the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United by suggesting that he might look for a challenge away from Bayern Munich.

Muller, 31, has spent his entire career with the Bavarians, making 571 appearances for the German giants. After coming up through the club’s youth system, he made his senior debut in August 2008.

The rest is history, with the midfielder lifting the Bundesliga trophy on nine occasions. He also has two Champions League winners’ medals and has won the DFB-Pokal six times.

Add to that 100 Germany caps plus the 2014 World Cup title and it’s a career most would envy. Hailing from Bavaria, it seemed inevitable that he would play for Bayern.

He has been the proverbial one-club man. And it was thought the player with 38 Germany goals would end his career at the Allianz Arena.

But, having watched former Bayern team-mate Thiago Alcantara move to Liverpool, he confessed that the future is not set in stone.

“I’m not fixed to this club,” he told The Times. “I have a special relationship, I love Bayern before I started playing for them.

“But when there is a situation where you have to decide maybe to play for a different club it would be no shame and no problem at all. Maybe like with Thiago.”
