Liverpool reignite interest in £53.5m winger ‘promised’ to Prem club

Samuel Chukwueze TEAMtalk

Liverpool are reignited their interest in signing Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze, according to a report in France.

Despite the arrival of attacker Takumi Minamino from RB Salzburg earlier this month, Jurgen Klopp is still keen to strengthen his forward line, which has seen Rhian Brewster depart on loan to Swansea.

Foot Mercato claim Chukwueze has been “promised” to a Premier League club and the Reds could be the side to benefit from the arrival of the 20-year-old.

The Nigeria international, who was linked with Liverpool last summer, played down the interest at the time.

“I am aware that there are several interested teams, but I am still a Villarreal player and there is nothing concrete,” he told Marca.

Chukwueze was one of the breakout stars of LaLiga last season, with the winger scoring eight goals in 38 appearances in all competitions in his first season at the top level.

Lyon, Chelsea and Man City have also been linked with the wide man, who has previously made no secret of his desire to play in the Premier League after missing out on a move to Arsenal as a teenager.

Chukwueze, who has three goals and three assists this season, is understood to have a £53.5million release clause, but the report claims Villarreal will do business for £34million.

“Playing in England is still an ambition for me,” he told Tribal Football in May.

“I need to keep on working hard and to keep improving. I really want to play in England.

“It was very close for me to sign for Arsenal, almost had the contract in my hands. Unfortunately, it did not work out fine with my academy due to the side of agreement and payment. They did not agree with the terms of the contract.”
