Lallana replacement scouted extensively, but Liverpool not planning move

Todd Cantwell TEAMtalk

Liverpool have scouted Todd Cantwell extensively, but are not planning to make a move for him this summer, claims reliable journalist James Pearce.

The Norwich midfielder has burst on to the Premier League scene this season with some impressive displays for the relegation-threatened side.

Six goals in 28 appearances in the Premier League this season have had scouts flocking to check on the England U21 midfielder.

Only last month The Athletic’s David Ornstein claimed Liverpool were now “front-runners” for the 22-year-old.

Ornstein has claimed that Manchester United and Liverpool have been joined by Manchester City and Tottenham in hunting a deal for Cantwell.

Now though James Pearce has told The Athletic’s Red Agenda podcast  that Liverpool do not have Cantwell listed as a top target.

Pearce said: “I wouldn’t describe him as a top target, but he is certainly someone that they (Liverpool) have watched and heavily scouted, but I’m not aware of them planning to make a move for him.”

One thing is for sure, The Athletic have covered all bases regarding Cantwell, who recently labelled Sadio Mane’s winner against the Canaries as “frightening”.

With Adam Lallana and Xherdan Shaqiri expected to leave in the summer the interest in the left-sided Cantwell makes sense and he certainly ticks plenty of boxes for Jurgen Klopp regarding his potential.

There is also a case to promote Curtis Jones into the first-team squad next season and that will be on Klopp’s mind, although he promised a bigger role for Rhian Brewster last season before sending him out on loan to Swansea in January.
