Liverpool beat deadline to complete deal for Man Utd target in twin signing

Liverpool have completed the signing of Stefan Bajcetic from Celta Vigo to follow up their capture of Calum Scanlon from Birmingham City.

The champions have been at work to bolster their ranks ahead of the January transfer window opening. However, they have been focusing more on their academy than first team.

Scanlon recently emerged as a target before announcing his move from Birmingham in December.

Now, The Athletic have confirmed that that move has been formally completed – as well as the one that will see Liverpool bring Bajcetic to England.

There was a greater sense of urgency to complete the move for Bajcetic. Liverpool had to complete the deal before Brexit.

It appears they managed to beat the deadline, with The Athletic explaining how the transfer has come about.

Bajcetic was also on Man Utd’s wishlist. However, Liverpool were able to convince him instead.

The report reveals that academy director Alex Inglethorpe, assistant academy director Nick Marshall and under-23s coach Barry Lewtas all took part in negotiations with Bajcetic, his agent and family.

The trio also managed to convince Celta Vigo that their offer of €250,000 was the one they should accept.

Liverpool to give Bajcetic, Scanlon time

Liverpool have been scouting Bajcetic for more than one year, with Matt Newbury and Kiko Espinar pushing the transfer through.

They have been impressed with the attitude of both Bajcetic and Scanlon. Therefore, they decided to offer them terms at Anfield.

The club are yet to decide which academy teams the duo will play for, though, and will give them time to settle in.
