Joel Matip’s knee injury is worse than first feared and the Liverpool defender could be out for up to six weeks, according to a report.
The former Cameroon international has missed four of Liverpool’s last five games with the issue, the 1-1 draw at Manchester United his only appearance in that time.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was optimistic about the centre-back’s fitness last week, telling a press conference ahead of the Champions League clash with Genk that it was “not a serious thing”.
However, according to the Evening Standard, Matip could now face up to six weeks on the sidelines with the problem, which could rule him out of up to 10 fixtures including the game against Manchester City in November and the Merseyside derby in December.
Dejan Lovren has started instead of Matip in Liverpool’s last two games with Joe Gomez – who has reportedly pondered leaving the club due to a lack of playing time – featuring from the bench in those fixtures.
Liverpool’s victory over Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday kept them six points clear at the top of the Premier League and extended their unbeaten start to the league campaign.
