Liverpool have opened talks with goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher about tying him down to a new long-term contract, a report has claimed.

The 22-year-old moved to Anfield in 2015 and entertained a sporadic role last season, making four first-team appearances.

But while he has only made five outings so far this term, they have taken on much greater significance.

The Irishman starred in Liverpool’s 1-0 Champions League win over Ajax in December, making a stunning save to keep a clean sheet and secure the Reds’ place in the last 16.

As such, the Irish Examiner claims that such strides have made tying him down a ‘priority’ to club chiefs.

Furthermore, Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp considers Kelleher ‘central’ to his long-term plan, given his age and potential.

The Irish Examiner does not state the length of the new contract that Liverpool are proposing, nor does the report mention the sort of salary that the player will earn.

However, the utmost priority for now is making sure that the goalkeeper is on board with an Anfield stay.

Kelleher has 17 months left on his current deal and could seek a new club overseas next January if his situation remains unresolved.

Following on from his Champions League heroics, Kelleher immediately earned his first Premier League start. He played in the 4-0 win over Wolves, with 2,000 Liverpool fans cheering him on at Anfield.

Meanwhile, he made his second league appearance in the 1-0 defeat to Brighton. Elsewhere, he played in the 1-1 draw with Midtjylland and the FA Cup win over Aston Villa.
