Liverpool tipped to sell forgotten duo to fund £50m Timo Werner move

Liverpool have been tipped to sell two forgotten stars to fund a £50million move for top strike target Timo Werner this summer.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have reportedly stepped up their efforts to land the RB Leipzig forward, who has scored 21 Bundesliga goals this season, with Werner’s release clause sitting at £50m.

However, any team wanting to sign the 24-year-old for that price will have to do so before the offer expires in April.

According to a report in the Daily Express, Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards will get creative to raise the funds to bring one of Europe’s top young striking talents to Anfield.

Edwards has been dubbed a miracle worker for some of the fees the club have received for their bit-part players since he has arrived at the club in 2016.

And the same is being tipped to happen again this summer, when the club have decisions to make on the futures of Harry Wilson and Marko Grujic.

Neither player has been given the chance to stake a claim for a regular place in Klopp’s first-team, with Wilson sent out on loan to Crewe, Hull, Derby and Bournemouth.

But he told BT Sport recently that he has a big summer ahead, admitting: “I feel like I’ve got that decision to make in the summer.

“I feel like my last two years of loans have been good and this one has been positive for me as well.

“I’m finally in the Premier League which is what I’ve worked towards.

“In the summer I will be concentrating on Wales but once that is done, I may have a decision to make.”

The report adds that Liverpool know they could ‘make as much as £30million’ on the 23-year-old and that ‘may tempt them knowing it could chisel a large chunk of the Werner fee’.

The Reds will also have to think hard about what to do with Grujic, who has made waves in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin.

He was told that if he spent one last season in Germany, he would then be considered for the first-team picture next season.

With Adam Lallana expected to leave on a free, that would potentially open up a vacancy in the centre of a packed Reds midfield.

But Grujic, who is valued at £25m after being dubbed “the best midfielder” former Hertha boss Pal Dardai has seen in his 22 years at the club, could also be sacrificed in order for Liverpool to bring in Werner.

Meanwhile, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has reminded fans that “there are more important things in life than football”. Read more…
