One Liverpool misfit has seen a potential escape route from Anfield freeze over after one of his main suitors reportedly dropped their interest.
After losing their Premier League title to Manchester City, Liverpool need to rebuild their squad this summer. As well as looking into signings, they must find solutions for some of their unsettled fringe players. Not all will leave, but there will be plenty of clubs looking into opportunities.
For example, Kostas Tsimikas has been linked with Napoli fairly frequently in recent weeks. The left-back joined Liverpool last summer from Olympiacos, but has barely been given a chance.
Finding it hard to dislodge Andy Robertson from the starting spot, Tsimikas only totalled a mere five minutes of Premier League action in his debut Liverpool season.
Napoli are looking for a new left-back after Faouzi Ghoulam’s injury problems gave them a headache again. They were keen on Tsimikas before he joined Liverpool and were tipped to revive that interest.
But according to Ciro Venerato, who has good connections with Napoli, the Serie A side will not be pursuing Tsimikas this summer.
Transfer Chatter - Three Clubs in for Jack Grealish, Liverpool eyeing Portugal midfielder and Leeds monitoring Copa America star
Aston Villa bracing themselves as three clubs want Jack Grealish, Liverpool keeping tabs on ex-Premier League midfielder at EURO 2020 and Marcelo Bielsa intrigued by Chilean star in the Copa America, all in today's transfer chatter.
Speaking to Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli, the Rai Sport expert revealed Tsimikas will not be heading to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
It seems to be a decision from Napoli rather than the player; Venerato claims the Partenopei “will not take him”.
Instead, the Italians will be turning their attention elsewhere. They are looking at Cagliari’s Charalampos Lykogiannis, but could yet make a signing from the Premier League.
Napoli working for Emerson instead
Incoming Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti previously turned Emerson from a benchwarmer at Roma to a man they were able to sell to Chelsea for more than €20m.
Things haven’t worked out as well for Emerson at Chelsea, where he is behind Ben Chilwell and Marcos Alonso in the pecking order.
Therefore, the Blues are willing to cash in on him. A reunion with Spalletti may get the best out of him again.
Venerato confirmed that Napoli are “working” on a deal for Emerson, while they also have an anonymous alternative in mind.
But Tsimikas is one man who will seemingly not be going to Naples, instead continuing with Liverpool. In fact, they could have a bigger plan for him in the future despite his indifferent debut campaign.
