Liverpool should steer clear of a move for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner because he would not fit into Jurgen Klopp’s style of play, according to Steve McManaman.
Klopp has formed one of Europe’s deadliest attacking trios in his time at Liverpool, with Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane becoming an unmissable part of the side.
The Reds have been criticised for their lack of depth behind their main attack in the past, although the addition of Takumi Minamino earlier this month has boosted their options.
What’s more, Liverpool have been linked in recent weeks with a move for Germany international Werner, who is reported to have a €60m release clause in his contract.
The 23-year-old has been in fine form for Leipzig this season, scoring 20 goals in 18 Bundesliga appearances as the club chase their first Bundesliga title.
Speaking to HorseRacing.net, however, McManaman highlighted why Liverpool may not in fact be interested in a move for the forward.
“I think he’s a great goalscorer and his record proves that,” the pundit said.
“Whether he’s the player that the other three at Liverpool are, with a footballing brain, then I don’t necessarily think he is.
“I don’t think he’s the type of player that will take people on and positionally move wide and things like that. I think he is a proper goalscorer.
“I do wonder if Liverpool are actually interested in him if I’m being honest. I don’t think he’s the type of player that Liverpool would go for at this moment.
“Is he a proven goalscorer? Yes he is. Would he get into the Liverpool team? Then I think that would be a different question.
“If you’re going to sign a proven goalscorer for a huge amount of money then he’d want to go right into the team?
“So that’s why I would question whether Liverpool are actually interested in Werner.”
In other Liverpool news, the Reds are reportedly interested in signing Nice winger Pedro Brazao.
Klopp has prioritised adding to the club’s youth ranks in recent transfer windows, with the likes of Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg being brought in last summer.
According to French news outlet RMC Sport, Klopp is keeping a close eye on Portugal Under-19 international Brazao as another who could join the list of talented young players.
