Liverpool have been urged to make a bid for Tottenham striker Harry Kane in the event that Manchester City sign Erling Haaland.
City are currently 10 points ahead of the defending champions in the Premier League. It has left Liverpool mulling over what they can do to improve.
The Reds blew everyone away in the Premier League last season, but a lack of squad depth has caught up with them this time around.
The title race may still have a long way to go, but City’s 4-1 win over Liverpool at the weekend exposed some issues with Jurgen Klopp’s side. Therefore, they may have some thinking to do in the summer.
City are already looking to strengthen their winning formula. They are looking for a long-term successor to Sergio Aguero up front and Borussia Dortmund’s Haaland is at the top of their wishlist.
Such a move would make Pep Guardiola’s side even stronger, leaving Liverpool with some catching up to do.
One way they could close the gap again would be to make a high-profile signing of their own. And writing for the Mirror, former Reds striker Stan Collymore has said that England captain Kane is the man they should target.
He said: “City are showing this season how strongly they can come back.
“You have to look at these things over four or five years and Liverpool will still be in the title talk in each of them.
“That said, they do need to wake up and smell the coffee, which means owners FSG spending money to go toe-to-toe with City in that period.
“It means that if City go out and buy Erling Haaland this summer then Liverpool must buy the next Robert Lewandowski or even put in a bid for Harry Kane.
“What they can’t do is just say, ‘We have a really good XI, some youngsters coming through, and we can maintain our challenges that way’, because there are too many other teams with the money to make sure that won’t be the case.”
Kane also wanted by City?
Bild journalist Christian Falk claimed that Kane was part of City’s shortlist of potential replacements for Aguero.
There were rumours of a possible £90m offer for the striker, who has more than 150 Premier League goals to his name.
However, it seems City’s attention has turned more towards Haaland since then. It remains to be seen if Liverpool will actually make a move for a striker in the summer.
