Liverpool and Tottenham have been linked with a possible move for Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella but the Italians seem unlikely to sell despite their current financial perils.
Barella, 23, is locked to the Serie A outfit until the summer of 2024. He is highly thought of both at club level and with the Italy national side, having been capped 18 times.
But Calciomercato claim that the English giants are monitoring his situation at the San Siro.
Having cut his teeth at Cagliari, the talented schemer arrived at Inter in the summer of 2019. An initial loan deal was replaced by a four-year contract and the youngster has gone from strength to strength.
He has been likened to Liverpool legend and current Rangers manager Steven Gerrard. ‘Box-to-box’ qualities and an ability to dribble past defenders would make him an asset to any team.
While Liverpool have an array of attacking talent they have stuttered of late. Their title is under threat and the arrival of a new creative force could be a shot in the arm.
He has scored twice and assisted six more for Inter in 2020-2021 to date. The Sardinian is not afraid to get his foot stuck in and does the hard yards as well as most.
There will be many suitors but, with Inter in a title race he is likely to stay put. Antonio Conte’s side are locked in a Scudetto battle with fierce rivals AC Milan.
They sit second in the table and trail the Rossoneri by three points. Inter though are struggling financially and it’s suggested his sale could be forced upon them. The summer seems a more likely option, when clubs’ finances will become a lot clearer as the pandemic, hopefully, starts to recede.
Barella in for Dele
Spurs seem on the verge of selling Dele Alli and Barella would certainly be a replacement for the England man. He is now out of favour under Jose Mourinho and a loan to Paris Saint-Germain had been mooted.
However, it seems as though the north Londoners want a permanent transfer for the former Milton Keynes Dons ace. PSG were linked with Dele over the summer and the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino strengthened those ties.
The Argentinian is a known admirer of the midfielder and could push for his signature this month. Certainly if he remains at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a summer exit seems inevitable.
He will want regular game time between now and then to ensure he is part of England’s plans for the European Championship.
