Liverpool have been told they will signing a player of genuine quality in Timo Werner with one former star admitting he is “excited” to see what the striker can do at Anfield.
Werner is wanted by big clubs across Europe after banging in 27 goals in 36 games in all competitions so far this season, with the Reds known to be among the favourites to get a deal done.
Indeed, Jurgen Klopp is a huge fan of the 24-year-old and wants to add to him to his already prolific attacking rotation at Anfield.
However, the Reds are doing battle with the likes of Chelsea, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan to land a player who has a €60million (£52m) release clause.
Jamie Carragher last week raised concerns concerns why he feared a deal for Werner would be off for Liverpool, highlighting the financial squeeze being placed on the game due to its current inactivity.
However, those hopes did take something of an upturn again when the Reds were given a 65% chance of securing Werner’s transfer this summer.
And the news gets better for Liverpool, with Leipzig seemingly planning for life after Werner by closing on a deal for his replacement – and it’s a player familiar to Reds supporters: Werner Bremen forward Milot Rashica.
Former Liverpool favourite John Aldridge also believes a deal to bring Werner to Liverpool will soon be agreed – and admits Reds supporters should be genuinely excited to see what he can do on Merseyside.
“I have to say Timo Werner is the one who excites me the most when it comes to the potential targets who could be coming in,” Aldridge told Liverpool Echo.
“He looks to have all the attributes you would want from a striker in a Jurgen Klopp team and all the noises coming out of his camp seem to indicate that he would really like to play for Liverpool.
“And because of those going out of the club and off the wage bill, we will have money to balance the books.
“So if Liverpool go out and spend £60+ million I’ve got no problem with that because it’s money generated through player sales and obviously from being successful on the pitch as well.”
Werner transfer discouraged by Berbatov
Bayern Munich are also thought to be in the running to sign Werner and former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov thinks a move within Germany is the best bet for Werner.
Berbatov told Betfair: “There have been reports about Bayern Munich’s interest in Timo Werner, and having played in the Bundesliga, Munich are up their with the biggest names like Real Madrid, Manchester United, Barcelona, Manchester City, Juventus and so on.
“Every season they are up there in the Champions League and they have been dominant in Germany.
“To be honest, it looks like a sensible move for Werner, he knows the league, they know him there, he can get used to his surroundings a lot easier.
“The only thing for me that I may question is if he goes there he will have a lot of competition to face in Robert Lewandowski, Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman and potentially Leroy Sane, who they are also linked with, so there are a lot of similarities for one or two positions.
“But, like I said, it makes more sense for him to go there than move to England where it will probably take him a bit more time to adjust to things.”
However, Werner’s heart appears to be set on Liverpool with the Germany attacker making clear his admiration for the Reds and his desire to play under countryman Jurgen Klopp.
“I know that Liverpool is the best team at the moment in the world and when you are linked with that team it makes me very proud,” he said after his goal against Tottenham in the Champions League, while he also labelled Klopp “the best coach in the world”.
