Last chance for Liverpool as frozen out star linked with January exit

Loris Karius TEAMtalk

Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius could be heading for the Swiss Super League side FC Basel in January, claims a report.

The 28-year-old goalkeeper has been out of favour at Anfield ever since Alisson arrived from Roma. The Brazilian, was at the time, the world’s most expensive goalkeeper when he signed for £67m in July 2018.

Alisson’s arrival was prompted by Karius’ nightmare Champions League final display in 2018.

Karius started for Liverpool against Real Madrid in the May showpiece, but made two high-profile mistakes in the 3-1 defeat in Kiev.

Liverpool later claimed that the goalkeeper had suffered a concussion in the game after Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos appeared to catch him with an elbow.

Karius later admitted he had received death threats after the game. And his Liverpool career has been on a slippery slope ever since.

Now Basel are pondering a deal for the keeper, according to Bild reporter Christian Falk.

Summer transfer collapsed

Karius, who has been spent loan spells with Besiktas and Union Berlin, is out of contract in 2022. That means that Liverpool’s last chance to get a fee for the player will be in the next window.

It’s understood Karius was a target for Basel in the summer. According to The Athletic, the keeper was wanted by the Swiss outfit, but the player could not agree personal terms.

Liverpool can do the treble

Liverpool can do the treble

Don't let Liverpool's quiet summer transfer window fool you. They are still one of the best sides in the world and could very well be on for a highly successful season.

That was likely to have frustrated Jurgen Klopp, who has Caoimhin Kelleher and Adrian as back up for Alisson. The 22-year-old Kelleher got the vote in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup win over Norwich and put in an assured display.

Liverpool spent transfer deadline day trying to offload the German with the keeper frozen out at Anfield. But Karius stayed put with little hope of kicking a ball again for the Reds.

Now the club will be hoping a deal can be hammered out for the player before they lose him for free in July2022.
