Liverpool looming in race for burgeoning Dutch star with rising price tag

PSV have raised their asking price for Dutch striker Donyell Malen due to a widespread belief that Liverpool could make a move for him this summer, reports claim.

Malen previously played for Arsenal at youth level, but after failing to break into the first team, returned to the Netherlands in 2017. Since then, he has made 110 senior appearances, scoring 51 goals and providing 22 assists.

That form has made him one of the most coveted forwards outside Europe’s top five leagues. Liverpool’s interest became apparent earlier this month.

Last season’s Premier League champions have not been as effective in attack this time around. Therefore, they have been linked with a number of players who could improve their depth up front.

Malen appears to be one of the main names on the agenda. And according to Gazzetta Dello Sport, other clubs who are interested in Malen are concerned that Liverpool could outbid them.

Juventus and AC Milan have been keeping tabs on the 22-year-old, with the latter showing the most interest recently.

However, they would be powerless if Liverpool put a big offer on the table, as it is believed they are capable of doing. In fact, PSV themselves are aware of that possibility.

With that in mind, the Dutch club have increased their asking price for Malen to €30m. It is not yet clear if Liverpool will be willing to meet this, but they do seem to be monitoring the situation.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says his team's league form will have an important impact on their hopes to be successful in the Champions League this season.

Able to play as a centre-forward or a winger, Malen could provide cover all across the frontline. And perhaps if one of the current front three leaves Anfield, he could be a direct replacement.

With Mino Raiola as his agent, Malen is in good hands to secure a big move if he wants one. He remains under contract with PSV until 2024, but it seems he will move on before then.

Liverpool could be a potential destination, but they will have to flex their financial muscles to win the race.

Liverpool striker swap on cards

Another option for Liverpool appears to be Odsonne Edouard, who looks ready to leave Celtic.

The striker has long been linked with a move south of the border, but Liverpool’s interest only emerged recently.

Now, though, there are claims that Liverpool could offer Divock Origi to Celtic in a swap deal for Edouard. That’s according to Anfield Central.

The Reds have been watching Edouard this season, and offering Origi to the Scottish side could be the key to unlocking the deal.
