Manchester United have announced goalkeeper Victor Valdes will join Standard Liege on loan for the rest of the season.

The 34-year-old is moving to the Belgian club on loan until the end of the season and will become a free agent in the summer.

A statement on the Red Devils’ website said: “Manchester United and Standard Liege have reached agreement for the temporary transfer of goalkeeper Victor Valdes, effective until the end of the current season.”

The former Barcelona goalkeeper has only made two appearances since joining United 12 months ago and has reportedly experienced a strained relationship with manager Louis van Gaal.

Valdes on Thursday sent a farewell message to his supporters, posting a message on Twitter above a picture of United’s training ground saying: ”Thank you all for your support during these months of hard work for me. I will never forget! See you soon!”

Valdes signed an 18-month contract with United after moving to Old Trafford a year ago but fell out with Van Gaal over the summer.

He did not go on the summer tour to the United States and was not permitted to train with the first-team squad, and has not been given a shirt number this term.

Valdes will receive a warmer welcome in Liege, but his new team-mate Mathieu Dossevi has questioned the signing.

The Togo international believes insists that current No 1 Guillaume Hubert should retain the faith of coach Yannick Ferrera.

Dossevi said: “Of course, Valdes is a great player. But I seriously wonder if we actually need him – and I don’t think so.

“We have a great goalkeeper in Guillaume Hubert. He is a fantastic keeper. Guillaume has been showing brilliant things in goal for our club and the players are all right behind him.

“I think that is normal. Only thanks to Guillaume we have the chance to qualify for the Belgium Cup final. So why on earth would we want to replace him?”

Valdes won the Champions League three times at Barca and has also won the World Cup and European Championship with Spain.
