The England U21 keeper, who spent time on loan at Oxford United earlier this season, has played 80 times for Nigel Clough’s League One side.

The 21-year-old, will offer competition to Dan Twardzik, Gunnar Nielsen and Ross Stewart for the number one spot at Fir Park.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Motherwell boss Ian Baraclough said: “His pedigree is undoubted having had recognition through the England youth set-up, up to and including the Under 21s team.

“Hopefully he can continue the tradition at this football club of taking goalkeepers from England and developing them on.”

Long, who made his first-team debut for United in May 2011, said: “I’m really looking forward to it and it’s a new challenge for me to play in Scotland.

“It will be great to get back playing and hopefully help push the team up the table. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the club and the manager so I can’t wait to get started.”
