Luis Suarez statue will be ‘back soon’ after being vandalised in Uruguay

A statue of Luis Suarez in his hometown of Salto in Uruguay has been vandalised, according to reports.

An image of the fallen-down statue appeared on Twitter and reports in the local press claim the statue had been purposely knocked down.

Barcelona star Suarez is a footballing legend in Uruguay and the tribute to him was knocked over at the weekend while he was attending Lionel Messi’s wedding in Rosario, Argentina.

According to local media reports, the vandal was arrested by police and found to have been drinking, and will be made to pay damages to fix the statue.

The statue of the former Liverpool forward was was unveiled in the city which is 500km north of Montevideo, last July.

It showed Suarez raising his hand in celebration while wearing the light blue national team jersey.

The fallen Suarez was taken away to be mended and was replaced by a note which read: “I went to Messi’s wedding, I’ll be back soon.”
