Lyon desperately trying to save face amid new Nabil Fekir claims

Real Madrid are among several clubs chasing Nabil Fekir, according to Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas.

The France midfielder almost joined Liverpool earlier this month after the Reds agreed a £53million transfer with the Ligue 1 club.

The 24-year-old agreed personal terms and underwent an interview with Liverpool TV before the deal fell through after the results of the player’s medical were revealed.

Now though Aulas says Real Madrid are interested in the player, who he says he still wants to keep in France.

“Yeah, listen, at that stage it was foreseen he would go to Liverpool, I had given it the green light to go ahead. but it just took too long, things were just too drawn out.

“He is an exceptional player, he keeps the ball in little space and has an incredible talent. The fact that things didn’t conclude with Liverpool and it didn’t happen in that time frame has peaked the interest of a lot of other clubs – Real Madrid, but not just Real Madrid and their new trainer.

“There is a lot of interest from other camps, so everything is possible,” Aulas told RT France, via The Mirror.

“My objective is to get him to stay; the players are like sons to me and I hope to persuade him to stay. But if he absolutely wishes to leave, then we will try to find the biggest club to match his talent.”

Liverpool are believed to have concerns over a ligament graft the player underwent to repair cruciate damage, Aulas though insists he pulled the plug on the deal.

Earlier this week Fekir himself claimed his knee was fine, but refused to talk about any prospective transfer.

“My knee is super good. We work a lot on it, we reinforce it. But I honestly feel like before my injury,” he said on France duty in Russia.

The forward’s agent has also suggested that the move could still be alive despite the numerous hitches.
