Chelsea are considering a move for another striker because boss Frank Lampard has serious doubts about Tammy Abraham, according to a report.
Claims on Thursday indicated that Lampard is looking for another “stellar” attacking signing before next season.
Indeed, the speculation comes after the Blues landed serious goal threats Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.
Those signings will add further exciting talent to Chelsea’s front line but, according to Football Insider, Lampard wants more because he has doubts about Abraham.
The source says Lampard is unsure Abraham has what it takes to score goals consistently at the highest level.
Chelsea are at the start of what Lampard hopes will be a strong upward curve of success. However, he has doubts about whether Abraham can help fire him to silverware when it matters.
Abraham had a stunning start to the Premier League season, featuring his first Chelsea hat-trick against Wolves. However, injury midway through the season cost him game time until the campaign finished.
Alongside his struggles, Olivier Giroud picked up the mantle and delivered as Lampard’s first choice. Giroud’s success came after he had his own problems, including wanting to leave in January.
Amid the doubts about Abraham, Football Insider adds that the Blues are holding off on contract talks. The England international‘s deal runs out in 2023, having extended by a year after he reached goal targets.
That has given Chelsea breathing space but the source says they are reluctant to hand Abraham a bumper new deal if he is unable to perform at the highest level.
CHELSEA DEFENDER TARGET RESPONDS
Meanwhile, Sevilla defender Sergio Reguilon says he is not focusing on speculation over his future.
Chelsea are reportedly keen on the left-back as they hunt a replacement for the likes of Marcos Alonso.
However, he says he is not entertaining any links while Sevilla continue their Europa League campaign.
