Man City announce CL second leg with Real Madrid postponed

Manchester City have announced that the second leg of their Champions League last 16 clash with Real Madrid has been postponed.

The announcement comes after the news that the Madrid squad have been placed in self-isolation after a member of the club’s basketball team tested positive for coronavirus.

A statement on the City’s official website said: “The decision to postpone Tuesday’s game was made in conjunction with UEFA and follows confirmation that players from Real Madrid will self-isolate for fifteen days, after it emerged that a player from the club’s basketball team tested positive for COVID-19.

“The Club sends it best wishes to the players and staff at Real Madrid’s football and basketball teams.

Further information regarding the rescheduled date and related ticketing information will follow in due course.”

City earned a 2-1 lead in the first leg at the Bernabeu after goals from Gabriel Jesus and Kevin de Bruyne in the second half had completed the comeback following Isco’s 60th-minute goal.

The news follows confirmation from Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers earlier on Thursday that three members of his squad had been exhibiting symptoms of the virus.

Rodgers told a press conference: “So the few players who have shown the symptoms, we’ve obviously self-isolated them if you want to say that, and then we’ll see how that develops over the next couple of days.”

Elsewhere in Europe, the next two matchdays in LaLiga have been postponed, while Serie A games have been suspended until April 3.

Thursday also saw the postponements of the top two divisions in the Netherlands.
