Man City put Liverpool, Man Utd on alert as key idea alters Mbappe pursuit

Kylian Mbappe

Manchester City will not pursue the signing of Kylian Mbappe this summer, according to a report.

Mbappe is one of the hottest prospects in world football, having burst onto the scene with Monaco a few years back. He has since gone on to become a World Cup winner with France and a multiple Ligue 1 champion with PSG.

Still only 22, Mbappe has a bright future ahead of him. Many have predicted him as a future Ballon d’Or winner.

PSG may face a battle to keep hold of him. His contract is due to expire next summer, so they must tie him down to a new deal to avoid losing him for free.

Mbappe’s situation has a number of admirers watching on. Real Madrid have always seemed to be the prime suitor, but may not be able to afford him.

Therefore, there has been talk of a Premier League move. Liverpool are long-term admirers and have been urged to reignite their interest.

However, it would be a difficult deal – complicated further by interest from rival clubs. For example, he is on Manchester United’s shortlist – even if he is not the top priority.

Montero: Real want Haaland, Mbappe next summer

Montero: Real want Haaland, Mbappe next summer

Spanish football journalist Alvaro Montero believes Real Madrid will pursue deals for Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe next summer, amid speculation over Mohamed Salah's future.

But one team who will not be standing in their way is Manchester City. According to The Athletic, City have one reason why they do not want to sign Mbappe.

The report claims his wage demands are too high for City to consider. Given how rich they are, that may be cause for concern for his other suitors – unless someone is really willing to push the boat out.

It is not just the intrinsic value of his wages that is concerning for City. They believe bringing in someone as well-paid as Mbappe may disrupt the team spirit in the dressing room.

Even so, they are still on the lookout for a top-class forward to succeed Sergio Aguero, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

City have two others in mind

Erling Haaland TEAMtalk

The report adds that there are two names on their shortlist – Erling Haaland and Romelu Lukaku.

City know Lukaku well from his time spent with their rivals Man Utd. Since leaving the Premier League, the Belgian has answered his critics by becoming one of the best strikers in the world.

Only Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more goals in Serie A this season than the Inter striker. Lukaku has become a lethal frontman once more, and at 27, there could still be time for him to prove himself in England again.

Haaland is a younger target but one that is no less deadly. The Borussia Dortmund hitman has an astonishing scoring rate and will no doubt earn a bigger move in the near future.

He has a relatively cheap release clause active in 2022, but if Dortmund fail to qualify for the Champions League – which is entirely possible – he may leave before then.

Like Mbappe – the man who could be his rival for the Ballon d’Or over the next decade or so – there ae a number of teams queuing up for the 20-year-old.

Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola has confirmed that only a select group of clubs could afford him, four of which are in the Premier League. And that interest is reciprocal, with ESPN adding that Liverpool, Chelsea and Man Utd are also all watching on.
