Manchester City have registered their interest in signing Atletico Madrid centre back Jose Gimenez, according to reports.
Gimenez has recently been linked with Chelsea, who could look to strengthen their back line this summer. Frank Lampard’s side conceded 54 league goals, the worst record of the teams who finished in the top half.
And it is understood the Blues have scouted Gimenez with a view to making a move. Although, they would have to sell to make room to bring the Uruguayan in.
But they now face competition from within England after it emerged City are also keen on the 25-year-old, according to a report on ESPN, cited on Sports Mole.
Pep Guardiola’s side were much stronger than Chelsea defensively, letting in just 35 goals. However, they too had issues at the back in the first half of the season after Aymeric Laporte picked up an injury.
They conceded 23 goals in their first 19 games, losing five of them, which played a huge part in them losing their Premier League crown.
And City are expected to splash the cash on defenders as they attempt to bolster their options.
A £41million fee has been already been agreed with Bournemouth for the transfer of Nathan Ake. Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly is also believed to be a target.
And Gimenez is the latest name to be added to the list as Guardiola continues to scour the market.
The Atletico man has played a key part under Diego Simeone since joining in 2013, making 190 appearances. He has also won a La Liga title, Spanish Cup, Europa League and UEFA Super Cup in that time.
But the report states that Atletico may be willing to part ways with him as they look to bring in funds on the back of the coronavirus pandemic.
He won’t come cheap though, with the Spaniards insisting they will only sell if his £110million release clause is met.
Gimenez’s also has three years left to run on his current contract. That puts Atletico in a strong position to either receive the price they want or keep their highly-rated asset.
Parlour encourages Arteta to raid City
Another centre back who could be on the move is City’s John Stones. The Englishman fell out of favour in 2019/20, playing just 16 league games.
And Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has told Arteta to try and tempt his former employers into selling Stones to the Gunners this summer.
