Manchester City have joined the race for Barcelona starlet Riqui Puig, but look set to miss out, according to a report.
Puig seems likely to leave Barcelona on loan in January so that his development does not stagnate. The 21-year-old has played for just three minutes in La Liga this season.
A Barcelona academy graduate, Puig remains highly-rated for the future by club chiefs. However, he is not part of Ronald Koeman’s plans at the moment.
Therefore, Barcelona are now considering allowing him to leave on loan in the winter transfer window. Reports have mentioned Leeds as an ambitious potential suitor.
However, they are not the only Premier League side to be linked. Manchester City have emerged as a contender for Puig in recent days.
Now, Estadio Deportivo back up those claims – but warn that City face an uphill struggle to get their man.
According to the report, City only want to consider a permanent transfer for Puig. Barcelona are adamant they will only allow him to leave on loan.
Therefore, the two parties are unlikely to come to an agreement. And with no update on Leeds’ apparent interest, Puig may have to stay in La Liga instead.
Real Betis join race for Puig
According to Estadio Deportivo, Puig may be more likely to find a temporary new home by staying in Spain.
It is claimed that Real Betis have joined the chasing pack for the midfielder, and they would be happy with a simple loan deal.
Real Betis have been interested in Puig since the summer, so could now take their opportunity to sign him.
That would spell bad news for City and Leeds, who would have to look elsewhere if they still want to strengthen in that position.
